What do you do with a Kendama?
When playing, the goal is to balance the ball (Tama) on the various cups (Cups) or the spike (Spike) of the handle (Ken) with precise movements. It requires skill, endurance, and practice.
Basic Kendama Technique
- Posture: Hold the Ken loosely in your hand, with the palm facing up.
- Movement from the legs: Use your knees to cushion, not just your arms.
- Look at the ball: Focus on the path of the ball.
- Smooth movements: Avoid jerky movements, perform everything in a controlled manner.
Most Basic Kendama Tricks for Beginners

Big Cup Goal: To place the ball on the largest cup (side of the Ken).
Keep the Ken steady, gently lift the ball, and catch it with the big cup. -
Small Cup Goal: To place the ball on the smaller cup (other side).
Works like Big Cup, but the area is smaller â requires more precision. -
Base Cup Goal: To place the ball on the lower cup.
Lift the ball and let it gently land on the lower cup. You need to rotate the Ken while the ball is flying. -
Spike Goal: To stick the ball on the tip of the Ken.
Pull the ball straight up, bring the Ken underneath, and let the ball slide into the hole. -
Airplane Goal: The Ken is held vertically and the ball is placed on top from below.
Lift the ball and place the tip of the Ken into the hole of the ball.
