What does a magnifying glass do with light?

Magnifying glasses are also referred to as magnifying lenses. They essentially consist of a convex converging lens, which is usually integrated into a handle.
Magnifying glasses are used to view very small things that cannot be seen properly with normal vision.

Why do magnifying glasses actually enlarge?

The converging lens of a magnifying glass produces a "virtual image" that is correspondingly larger on the retina in the eye. In the following image, the normal view of an object, which is relatively small on the retina, is shown at the top. Below, a virtual image is created through the magnifying glasses, which is significantly larger on the retina.

Magnifying glasses act like a convex (bulging outward) converging lens. The focal point is located behind the lens. Everything that is in front of the focal point is represented enlarged.

The reason for this is a "virtual image" that is created by looking through the magnifying glasses. The size of the virtual image varies due to different distances - between the eye and the magnifying glass or between the magnifying glass and the object.

Even the ancient Egyptians recognized the principle of magnifying glasses. They discovered the magnifying effect of water droplets on leaves. A water droplet acts like a lens that refracts light. The droplet enlarges what is behind it.

How do you change the batteries? Which batteries does the small magnifying glass use?

  • Identify the battery compartment:
Often, the battery compartment is located either on the side of the magnifying glass or on the back. It is usually a small, flat compartment secured with a screw.

  • Open the battery compartment:
When the compartment is closed with a screw, you need a small screwdriver to loosen it.

  • Remove the old battery:
Once the compartment is open, you can carefully remove the old button cell battery. Make sure to remember the position of the battery (polarity of the button cells) so you can insert the new battery exactly the same way.

  • Insert the new button cell battery:
Take a new button cell battery (make sure you have the correct type, e.g., CR1220) and insert it so that the correct side is facing up. Usually, this is the side with the plus sign (often the flat side). Follow the operating instructions for changing the batteries. If the polarity is not correct, the light will not work either.

  • Close the battery compartment:
After inserting the new battery, close the compartment again by securing it and tightening the screw.

  • Check if the magnifying glass works:
Turn on the handheld magnifier to ensure it works after changing the battery.
